    Unknown to BAL

[COZZENS, FREDERIC S.]. Father Tom and the Pope, or a Night in the Vatican. New York: A. Simpson & Co., 1867. 1st ed. Tall 8vo. 16, [9]-61 pp. Orig. chocolate brown cloth. Corners & ends of spine worn. $350.00

Wright II, 649 for one copy of an 1868 edition at MWA.  BAL 4010, calling Sir Samuel Ferguson the author, ascribing the "Ante-Preface" on pp. [v]-xiv to Cozzens, and there signed with the initials "F.S.C."  Our preface occupies the same pages, is called "Preface," and is not signed.  BAL does not collate either of the copies they record (MWA & H), but Wright's pagination differs from our copy slightly.  The name of the publishers differs as well as the 1868 edition is published by Moorhead, Simpson & Bond.  The 1868 edition at Harvard has an ownership date of September 1868; our copy is presented by an owner, the historian Charles C. Jones, in November 1867.  NUC records eight copies each of 1867 and 1868 editions.   However, in the copies of the 1867 edition recorded by NUC (also designated "Presentation" copies), the preface is dated November 11, 1867, and is signed in type by Cozzens. Our title page verso is also designated "Presentation Copy," but there is no date at the conclusion, nor is our Preface, as mentioned, signed in type by Cozzens.

Accompanied by a copy of the smaller format 1868 edition, very nice, except for a faded spine.
