HILDRETH, R[ICHARD]. The White Slave: or, Memoirs of a Fugitive.  A Story of Slave Life in Virginia, Etc.  First English Illustrated Edition.  With Eight Engravings. London: Ingram, Cook, 1852. 8vo. 302, [1] pp. Contemp. pebbled cloth with calf back & corners. $225.00

First published in 1836 as The Slave: or, Memoirs of Archy Moore, this is the first illustrated edition of the best selling anti-slavery novel before Uncle Tom's Cabin, and this edition, evidently, was published to compete with--and capitalize on--the publication of Uncle Tom.
