(MATHEMATICAL PERIODICAL). RUNKLE, J.D. (Editor). THE MATHEMATICAL MONTHLY. Cambridge, [Mass.]: John Bartlett, 1859-[61]. 4to. Vol. I-II of 3. Extensively illustrated. Orig. cloth, crudely rebacked. $225.00

The first two volumes of three, begun in Oct.1858. An interesting set, belonging to James B. Francis, with his initials and signature. He was author of The Lowell Hydraulic Experiments. There is a letter to Francis, dated 1876, from Benjamin Peirce, tipped in next to Peirce's portrait. DAB reports that only three volumes were published as "the time was not yet ripes for such a journal." Regardless, an important periodical in the history of American mathematics.
