[HAMMETT, SAMUEL ADAMS]. Sam Slick in Texas; or, the Piney Woods Tavern. By the Author of "A Stray Yankee.". London: G. Routledge, 1857. 1st ed. 16mo. 4, 188 pp. Contemp. 3/4 calf, marbled boards. $375.00

Wright II, 1079, for the Philadelphia edition of 1858, not noticing prior publication in England. Raines, p. 107, noticing only the 1858 edition. NUC records only two copies of this first edition.

A famous humorous depiction of the author's life in the wilds of Texas. "...in his third [book] he returned, evidently with delight, to Texas. 'Sam Slick,' in the title of this third book, is used generically; Hammett was not, as has been sometimes supposed, an imitator of Thomas Charles Haliburton." --DAB.
