| WHITEHEAD, ALFRED NORTH & BERTRAND RUSSELL. Principia Mathematica. Cambridge: University Press, 1910-63-63. 1st ed. of vol. I. Royal 8vo. Recent cloth & label on vol. I; Vol. II-III orig. cloth. Perforated lib. stamp on the title leaf of vol. I. $850.00 Honeyman Collection Sale VII, 3114, for the first edition. The collaboration between Russell and Whitehead developed after each had completed a first volume of projected two volume works: Whitehead's Universal Algebra (1898) and Russell's Principles of Mathematics (1903). They discovered that their projected second volumes "were practically on identical topics," and decided to work cooperatively. The result is "a historical masterpiece of mathematical architecture." Among many sources, see DSB for a discussion of the work's structure and influence. Volume one was published in an edition of 750 copies. |
