| (URSULINE MANUAL). The Ursuline Manual, or a Collection of Prayers, Spiritual Exercises, Etc....Arranged for the Young Ladies...Revised by the Very Rev. John Power. New York: Edward Dunigan, 1840. 1st American edition. Thick 16mo. 520 pp. Orig. gilt stamped calf, with gilt stamped cross on front cover. Aeg. $275.00 R & B 40-6681 (five copies). Imprints locates one copy of a second edition published in Baltimore in 1840 and one copy of an 1839 edition published in New York. The burning of the Ursuline Convent in Charlestown, Mass. in 1834 was a landmark event in the American nativistic movement. It was followed by a nation-wide campaign against Catholicism in the following decades, and probably accounts for the scarcity of Ursuline manuals. |
