[POE, EDGAR ALLAN]. The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, of Nantucket. Comprising the Details of a Mutiny and Atrocious Butchery on Board the American Brig Grampus, on Her Way to the South Seas, in the Month of June, 1827. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1838. 1st ed. 12mo. 201 pp., plus 2 pp. of ads at the front (May 1838), 16 pp. at the back. Orig. cloth (very soiled), portion of printed paper label. Considerably foxed. Front inner & outer hinge opening at bottom; back inner hinge opening at bottom as well, otherwise sound. Two flyleaves present front, one in the back. Entirely unsophisticated. $3,250.00

Wright I, 2052. BAL 16128. Poe's first book of prose and his only book-length work of fiction. The ending of the first edition evidently tested the credulity of American readers, and the English edition, published several months later, altered the ending so that Pym died a day earlier.
